Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton teetered on the brink of impeachment Thursday after years of scandal, criminal charges and corruption accusations that the state’s Republican majority had largely met with silence until now.

In an unanimous decision, a Republican-led House investigative committee that spent months quietly looking into Paxton recommended impeaching the state’s top lawyer. The state House of Representatives could vote on the recommendation as soon as Friday. If the House impeaches Paxton, he would be forced to leave office immediately.

The move sets set up a remarkably sudden downfall for one of the GOP’s most prominent legal combatants, who in 2020 asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory. Only two officials in Texas’ nearly 200-year history have been impeached.

Paxton has been under FBI investigation for years over accusations that he used his office to help a donor and was separately indicted on securities fraud charges in 2015, but has yet to stand trial.

Everything about this [Paxton impeachment] from start to finish just stinks. It shows why many Americans
just loathe politicians. When this is over, it won’t surprise anyone, it will just outrage them — even more. He
was who we thought he was, they will say, and many Texans will echo it as well. One more chink the armor
of trust people have in so-called public servants.

We now know that Paxton wasn’t all that concerned about what his office wasn’t doing. He was more preoccupied
with how to use his office for personal gain; if it doubled for political gain, all the better.

The Paxton fiasco will forever go down in Texas history as an example not just of another politician caught
committing bribery, but also of what too many people do when they’ve had a taste of money, power and fame.

It will be one more case that sealed the mistrust of Texans, and whatever happens to Paxton, he has no one to
blame but himself.

The Senate was scheduled to meet Sunday ahead of today's final day of the legislative session, and Patrick has not signaled when the chamber will address the impeachment trial.

Even with the deadline today, state law allows the Senate to continue meeting on an impeachment matter, or set a later date to reconvene.
