Gold is a commodity... like oil, silver and pork-bellies.  It's sold on the commodities market.

(You can't buy groceries with oil or pork-bellies, either.)

Like any other money, gold is not consumed.  The vast majority of the gold mined throughout 6000 years is readily available in someone's ownership/control.   A small percentage is unrecoverable in industrial/consumer goods or lost.

Now that I think about it there Oz....you're probably right. I should have said, There WERE gold coins you could spend prior to the nobama fiasco.....GUFFAW!!
