The Abiogenic Petroleum Theory

The podcast begins with Dr. Willie Soon explaining that not all hydrocarbons come from fossils, a statement that surprises Tucker Carlson. Dr. Soon posits that some hydrocarbons are produced by geological processes rather than biological ones, a concept known as the abiogenic petroleum theory. This theory suggests that the Earth’s mantle contains significant amounts of methane and oil that did not originate from decaying organic material.

Dr. Hossenfelder clarifies that while it is true that hydrocarbons can be created through geological processes, the vast majority of hydrocarbons we have discovered come from fossils. She explains that the isotope ratio of carbon in hydrocarbons can reveal their origin. Plants preferentially absorb the lighter carbon isotope, and this signature is present in fossil-derived hydrocarbons. Additionally, the composition and location of these hydrocarbons also point to their biological origins.

Dr. Hossenfelder acknowledges that some hydrocarbons, such as methane pockets beneath the ocean floor, may be abiogenic. However, these instances are exceptions rather than the rule. Despite the theoretical possibility of abundant abiogenic hydrocarbons deep within the Earth, there is no substantial evidence to support their existence.

In her conclusion, Dr. Hossenfelder reiterates that while abiogenic hydrocarbons exist, they are not the primary source of the hydrocarbons we use. She emphasizes the importance of accurate information and criticizes the podcast for spreading misinformation. She encourages viewers to seek reliable sources and remain critical of sensationalist claims that lack scientific backing.
