Inflation may be easing, but Americans still face soaring prices!

President Biden praised Wednesday’s U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report showing how inflation continued to fall in July, though he admitted that "prices are still too high" as millions of Americans grapple with a cost of living that remains higher than it was before he took office.

The Labor Department on Wednesday said that the consumer price index (CPI), a broad measure of how much everyday goods like gasoline, groceries and rent cost, rose 0.2% in July from the previous month, in line with expectations. Prices climbed 2.9% from the same time last year. It marked the lowest level of inflation since March 2021.

"We have more work to do to lower costs for hardworking Americans, but we are making real progress, with wages rising faster than prices for 17 months in a row," Biden said in a statement released by the White House.

Homebuilders pulled back on building and plans to build homes in July, threatening to worsen home affordability in the U.S.

The pace of breaking ground on new projects fell 6.8 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,238,000, the Census Bureau said Friday. Economists had forecast a pace of 1.342 million.

Chicago faces an inflation rate that is among the highest in the country!

As Democrats gather in Chicago for their national convention, the Windy City still grapples with inflation notably higher than the national average.

The Labor Department reported last month that the consumer price index, a broad measure of how much everyday goods like gasoline, groceries, and rent cost, rose 0.2% in July and remains up 2.9% from the same time last year.

But the pace of inflation is much faster in certain parts of the country – including Chicago.

Consumer prices in Chicago surged 0.6% in July from the previous month, triple the national rate, and are up 3.7% compared to the year-ago period. That marked the second-highest annual rate recorded by a U.S. city.

'The Big Shrink': Americans are pulling back on spending as high prices persist!

How price pressures are putting the squeeze on American households!

A growing number of Americans are pumping the brakes on spending as they continue to face elevated prices for everyday necessities like food, rent and auto insurance.

New findings published by Empower show that 62% of Americans feel their purchasing power and income in relation to prices is decreasing due to persistent inflation. Another 82% said their money does not go as far as it used to. Additionally, 79% of respondents noted that many household goods like cereal and chips are dwindling in terms of serving sizes.

With prices remaining uncomfortably high, more people have said they are hitting the limit on how much they are willing to spend, according to the "Big Shrink" study.

About one-quarter of respondents – 27% – said they have hit a pricing limit, and aren't willing to pay anything more for grocery store staples – or else will cut the items from their shopping lists.

The US economy created 818,000 fewer jobs than previously reported!

Labor Department releases key payroll data!

The Bureau of Labor Statistics revised down its total tally of jobs created in March by 818,000 as part of its preliminary annual benchmark review of payroll data.

It marks the largest downward revision since 2009, and suggests the labor market began losing steam earlier than initially thought.

"The labor market appears weaker than originally reported," said Jeffrey Roach, chief economist at LPL Financial. "A deteriorating labor market will allow the Fed to highlight both sides of the dual mandate and investors should expect the Fed to prepare markets for a cut at the September meeting."
