A new study from the Cleveland Clinic has revealed that individuals who received multiple COVID-19 vaccine doses were at a higher risk of contracting the virus compared to those who received fewer or no doses. Analysis showed that the risk of infection increased with each additional dose administered, with those receiving more than three doses being 2.5 times more likely to become infected.

The increased risk persisted even after accounting for various factors. Although the reason for this finding remains unclear, researchers believe that the immunity developed from the vaccine might be weaker and less durable than from natural immunity, potentially heightening the risk of subsequent infections.

Despite these findings, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintains its recommendation for all individuals aged 6 months and older to receive COVID-19 vaccinations. However, the CDC has planned a meeting in mid-May to discuss whether to update the vaccine formulations to improve protection.

The study had certain limitations, including its use of a proxy to measure infection rates and not differentiating between symptomatic and asymptomatic infections. The authors of the study disclosed no conflicts of interest, and they also said that they received no funding.

The researchers also noticed that people who got more vaccine doses prior to Sept. 12, 2022 — the day the bivalent booster became available at the Cleveland Clinic — had a higher rate of testing positive in the following months than people who had gotten fewer prior vaccine doses. But the researchers didn’t find that more doses caused a higher risk of infection. Rather, this finding was an association that could be due to multiple other factors. And studies have generally found that each additional vaccine dose reduces COVID-19 risk.

Incorrect claims about the paper have been circulating since before it was peer-reviewed and published. Recently, a widely viewed social media post jumped to the conclusion that the study shows that “a higher number of COVID-19 vaccine doses received increases the risk of infection with COVID-19.” Another widely viewed post sharing the study results incorrectly concluded that the vaccines were a “failed experiment.”

The chart shows that in August and early September, the unvaccinated population accounted for the majority of Covid-19 cases. However, if we couple the partly vaccinated and 2/3 dose vaccinated population together we find that the vaccinated population have in fact accounted for the majority of cases since Aug 14th.

What we can also see from the above is that cases have rapidly shot up in the 2/3 dose vaccinated population between 04 Dec and 10 Dec, recording the highest number of cases since the beginning of September. Whereas the number of cases among the unvaccinated population are similar to what was recorded at the beginning of November.

If the reason for this sudden uptick has anything to do with the emergence of Omicron then it looks quite clear that the unvaccinated population have nothing to worry about, but the 2/3 dose vaccinated population possibly have everything to fear.

Consistent with similar findings in many prior studies [3,8,10,12,18–20], a higher number of prior vaccine doses was associated with a higher risk of COVID-19. The exact reason for this finding is not clear. It is possible that this may be related to the fact that vaccine-induced immunity is weaker and less durable than natural immunity. So, although somewhat protective in the short term, vaccination may increase risk of future infection because the act of vaccination prevents the occurrence of a more immunogenic event.

Thus, the short-term protection provided by a COVID-19 vaccine comes with a risk of increased susceptibility to COVID-19 in the future. This understanding
suggests that a more nuanced approach to COVID-19 is necessary. Although some individuals are at high risk of complications from COVID-19, and may benefit from receiving a vaccine frequently, the wisdom of vaccinating everyone with a vaccine of low effectiveness every few months to prevent what is generally a mild or an asymptomatic infection in most healthy persons, needs to be questioned.
